How many ways can we think of for a machine to be aware of its environment?
…I mean specifically without human intervention or input.
Example #1: Ambient light sensor.
Example #2: Thermometer.
Now you think of some…

I think aware is too strong a word. A machine is never “aware” of anything!
Not yet, at least. A machine can call inputs from the world around it… through various sensors. Those, though, do not create a sense of awareness – only a series of numbers that can then be interpreted by some savvy programmer…

What does a motion sensor, say on a motion activated webcam, register to turn on?
A circuit breaker flips when there’s a power overload.
A sump pump turns on when the water level in the bucket reaches a certain point, typically triggered when a ball attached to a lever floats to a certain point.
That’s all I got right now.
